RDHAP - Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice…

*What is it?

Registered Dental Hygienists (RDH) are dental professionals with extensive education in the prevention of oral disease including periodontal (gum) disease and caries (decay/cavities).  They provide preventative services including, but not limited to:  teeth cleaning, fluoride application, home care instructions, sealants, nutritional counseling, periodontal evaluations, periodontal therapy including scaling & root planing, antimicrobial irrigation and periodontal maintenance.

The Alternative Practice (RDHAP) designation is an additional license obtained by practicing hygienists after completing postgraduate studies in an Oral Health for People with Special Needs program, and passing an additional state exam.  Prerequisites for the RDHAP program also include a bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a minimum number of years in practice.

As of June 2017,  there were fewer than 600 licensed RDHAPs in the entire state of California.

RDHAPs are allowed to have their own independent practices which provide care outside the typical dental office setting and without being employed by a dentist.

*Who Benefits from the services of an RDHAP?

These clients may be the elderly, homebound, mentally or physically disabled, rehabilitating, underserved children & adults,  or anyone without access to dental care in a standard office setting.

The RDHAP is able to provide the preventive and periodontal services legally designated in the comfort of the patient's home, care facility, group home, rehabilitation facility or other convenient location.

We will travel to you with our state of the art mobile equipment.   Sterilization and sanitation are maintained to the same standard mandated by the state as in a conventional office.

*Why choose an RDHAP?

Oral diseases have been linked to many health issues including Heart Disease, Diabetes, Weight Loss and Alzheimer's disease.  The RDHAP licensure was inspired by a need to provide dental preventative care for those who have limited or no access to dental care.

Complete health care cannot be attained
